HOW TO BET ON TENNIS

Updated: Feb 15, 2021

Tennis is not considered among the mainstream sports but it is majorly used by bettors globally .The major leagues ATP and WTA Tours are the most recognized tours travel around the world.

The most popular ways to bet on tennis are wagering on:

· Money line

· The game spread

· Set spread or the over/under.

1. Money line

This is the most popular way to bet on tennis, which is another way of saying betting on a player to win the match.

Example: if an opponent is -120 on the money line against the rival, that means you’d have to pay $120 to win $100 on the opponent’s victory. If the rival is +110 in the same match, you’d win $110 on a $100 wager.

And just like you can bet the first five innings in baseball or the first period in hockey, you can do the same in tennis if you only want to bet the first set.

2. Game Spread

Another way to bet on tennis is to place a bet on the game spread. A lot of times tennis matches will feature big odds, so the spread is a way to level the playing field.

Example: If Rodger is a -1,100 favorite over Novak in a 3-set match, the game spread may be around -4.5. That means Rodger would need to win five more games than Novak in the match (6-2, 6-3) to cover the spread.

If Rodger wins (6-4, 6-4) and you bet the +4.5 on Novak, you win the bet.

3. Set Spread

Set Spread is basically the same set up as the game spread. The only difference is you are betting on sets instead of games.

Example: If Team(A) is favored in a match over Team(B), Team(A) will also be available at -1.5 sets, much like the way an MLB favorite is always available at -1.5 runs on the run-line. If you bet on Team(A)-1.5 sets and win in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) you win the bet. If Team(B) wins a set, you’d lose.

4. Over/Under

This is a wager on the total number of games played in a match.

Example: If Serena Williams and Simona Halep are playing a 3-set match, the Over/Under may be set at 22.5 games. If you think the match will be close and bet the over, you need the match to last for at least 23 games.

So if Serena wins (7-6, 6-4) that would mean the match consisted of 23 total games and you won your bet. Conversely, if the match ends (6-3, 7-6) you’d lose the wager because the match only went 22 games.

5. Futures

Futures work the same way as futures odds for March Madness would work. And for the four majors, you can even bet on futures for each quarter.

Example: If you bet Novak-200 to win his quarter at the French Open, he would just need to make it to the semifinals to cash your bet.

6. Live Betting

Odds change in live bets after every point so you have to be ready to pull the trigger before it’s too late. You can also bet who will win the next upcoming game. With all of the potential swings, it’s a great sport to trade for the most experienced sport bettors.

Example: If Roger Federer is down 4-0 in the fifth set at Wimbledon, you can bet him +800 live. Then, if he comes back to even the match at four games apiece, you can then take his opponent +400 live, locking in a guaranteed profit.

7. Props

Some books will even offer more exotic tennis props — such as bets on the exact score or whether or not there will be a tiebreak. These are high-risk wagers that are generally only available at larger tournaments — and only at certain books.

Examples of prop bets that you may encounter :

· Head-to-head matchups on which player will last the longest in a tournament

· Will there be a tie-break in the match? Yes or No?

· What round will player X be eliminated in?

· Total games played in a match

8. Handicap Betting

Handicap betting is a lot like spread betting in other sports. It aims to spot a number of games to the underdog to give them a fair playing field. Ideally, if the line is set correctly, the player who performs better than their expectations will be the winning bet.

The handicap bet is completely independent of the outcome of the match. Let’s look at an example that will clear things up.

Handicap 2-Way Games Won

Player A -2.5(Has a higher potential of winning the match)

Player B +2.5

9. Exact Score Betting

Exact score bets allow you to try and predict the exact score of each set or the exact number of sets won by each opponent. As you can imagine, this is probably pretty challenging. Which means that you can win big if your stakes go in the right way.

EXAMPLE: Looking at the certan matches the worst you could get paid for a correct pick is +450, with some exact predictions paying as well as +15000 in the same match. Here’s how the bet looks. Let say that Player A and Player B are playing, and you want to make an exact score bet on the first set. For some reason, you think Player A is going to crush Player B and win 6-1. You can place an exact score bet on this, and if you are correct, you will win big. Remember, you have to be 100% correct, and you have to pick who the winner is as well. You can’t just pick 6-1 and then if either player wins 6-1, you win. You have to be precise.

10. Match Betting

A match bet is similar to an outright winner bet, except that instead of picking the winner of an entire tournament, you are picking the winner of an individual match. You’ll have the option of picking either of the players to win. The underdog will usually pay out better than even money, similar to the outright tournament winners above.

Keep an eye on the payouts associated with the match you are interested in, as the lines will likely shift based on how the betting public is betting. The betting public is not usually regarded as intelligent and has a tendency to move lines incorrectly quite a bit. This is where you pound, and this is how you make money betting on tennis.
